What is Coasteering?
Posted by Webmaster on March 20th, 2010If you haven’t heard of coasteering, where have you been? It is an exciting mix of swimming climbing, traversing and jumps into the ocean. Usually the instructors are qualifies beach lifeguards and when required (the climbing elements are in scope for Mountain Instructor Award) possess climbing qualifications such as the Mountain Instructor Award or Mountain Instructor Certificate.
The basic individual safety equipment includes:
- Wet suit (for the cooler waters outside the tropics)
- Protective clothing and gloves to prevent abrasions – may be provided by the wet suit
- Shoes to provide grip on rocks
- Buoyancy aid
- Helmet
There are also usually a minimum of 2 instructors per group, so that in the event of an emergency one of them can raise the alarm whilst the other deals with the situation at hand.
You don’t have to particularly fit to have a go at coasteering, but you will be required to possess some swimming prowess.
Coasteering in Newquay, is particularly popular in summer!
